Patient Reviews on Your Clinic Website vs Google Reviews: What to Show and What to Avoid

Google reviews or testimonials on your own site? What patients trust, what medical ethics rules forbid doctors to publish, and what you can safely show.

    In This Article

Patients check reviews before they choose a doctor. Most of them look at Google first, because that is where they found you. Many doctors then ask a second question: should I also show patient reviews on my own clinic website, and how?

You can, but a clinic website is not like a shop's website. Medical ethics rules limit what doctors may say about their own results, Google has its own rules for reviews, and patient privacy comes first. This guide explains the difference between Google reviews and reviews on your website, and what is safe to show.

    In short:
    • Google reviews are what most patients read and trust, because the clinic does not choose them.
    • Put your effort into genuine Google reviews: ask every patient the same way and never offer anything in return.
    • On your website, link to your Google reviews rather than building a hand-picked wall of praise.
    • Never publish stories about cures or results, or anything that identifies a patient without clear written consent.

Google reviews and website reviews are not the same

    • Google reviews are written by patients on a platform you do not control. You cannot pick which ones appear. That is exactly why other patients trust them.
    • Reviews on your own website are chosen by you. Patients know that, so a page of only glowing quotes carries less weight than you might expect.

Both can help a patient decide, but they are not substitutes. A clinic with a thin Google profile and a long list of praise on its own site looks odd, not trustworthy.

    Start with Google reviews

Most patients meet your reviews on Google Search and Maps, and Google says reviews and ratings play a part in local results. The right way to get more of them is simple:

    • Ask every patient, the same way, at the end of the visit. Do not ask only the patients you think are happy.
    • Make it easy with the direct review link and a QR code at the front desk.
    • Never offer a discount, free visit, gift or anything else in return.
    • Never ask a patient not to post, or to take down, an honest review.

These rules come from Google's policy for reviews on Maps, which forbids selectively asking for positive reviews and offering incentives. For the step-by-step method, see how to get more Google reviews.

What doctors should not put on their website

The Indian Medical Council Regulations 2002 forbid doctors from soliciting patients and from boasting of cases, cures or remedies (regulation 6.1.1). A testimonial that says "the doctor cured my..." or a before-and-after story is the doctor's own website boasting of a result. Leave these out:

    • Patient stories about cures, outcomes or "success".
    • Before-and-after photos.
    • Patient names, photos or videos, unless the patient has given clear written consent for that exact use, and even then only for comments about the visit, not results.
    • Hand-picked quotes presented as if they were all your reviews.

What you can show on your website

    • A link to your Google reviews, for example "Read our reviews on Google", next to your address and map. Patients can see everything, good and bad, which is what builds trust.
    • Your rating as it stands on Google, kept up to date if you show it at all, and linked to the source.
    • Facts that answer the same worries reviews do: your qualifications and registration, timings, how booking and the queue work, what a first visit involves. See how to show your credentials.

What about review stars in Google search results?

Some advice says to add review markup to your website so stars appear under your link in Google. For a clinic's own reviews about itself, this usually does not work: Google stopped showing review stars for reviews a business publishes about itself on its own site (Google Search Central, 2019). Spend the time on genuine Google reviews instead.

Collecting feedback is different from collecting praise

Private feedback from every patient is still valuable. It tells you what to fix, such as waiting time or billing. Keep it separate from reviews: do not use it to decide who gets asked for a Google review. See how to collect patient feedback the right way.

    Frequently asked questions

Should I show patient reviews on my clinic website?

Link to your Google reviews rather than publishing hand-picked quotes. Never publish stories about cures or results, and never identify a patient without clear written consent.

Are reviews on a clinic website trusted more than Google reviews?

Usually not. Patients know the clinic chooses what appears on its own site, while it cannot choose its Google reviews. That is why genuine Google reviews matter more.

How can I get more genuine reviews?

Ask every patient the same way at the end of the visit, share the direct review link or a QR code, and never offer anything in return. Google's rules forbid asking only satisfied patients.

Can I add review stars to my website's Google listing?

For reviews a clinic publishes about itself on its own site, Google does not show review stars. Focus on your Google Business Profile reviews.
