Why clinic Google Ads waste money, four fixes, example ads for doctors, what the rules allow, and whether to start with ads or SEO.

    In This Article

Many clinics try Google Ads, watch the budget go, and find their appointment book looks the same. Google Ads can bring patients to a clinic, but only when the ads reach people nearby who need what you treat, say something factual and useful, and lead to a quick answer when the patient calls.

This guide covers why clinic campaigns waste money, four fixes, example ads, what the rules allow, and whether to start with ads or with SEO.

Why Google Ads fail for clinics

    • Ads shown too far away. If your location setting covers a whole city or state, you pay for clicks from people who will never travel to you.
    • Ads shown for the wrong searches. Depending on your keyword settings, Google can show your ad for searches that are only loosely related: jobs, courses, home remedies or a specialty you do not practise. Every one of those clicks costs money.
    • Ad and page do not match. Someone searching "child fever doctor near me" lands on a general home page, cannot find what they wanted, and leaves.
    • No tracking. Without counting calls and bookings, you cannot tell which ads bring patients and which only bring clicks.
    • Slow replies. A patient who calls and gets no answer calls the next clinic.

The good news: each of these can be fixed without a bigger budget.

    4 fixes for wasted spend

    1. Target only the area you serve, and block searches you don't treat

Set your location to a radius around the clinic, or to the areas your patients actually come from, not the whole city. In the location options, choose to reach people who are in or regularly in your area, not people who are only interested in it.

Then add negative keywords. These are words that stop your ad from showing when they appear in a search. A general physician might block words such as "job", "course", "salary" and "home remedy", and the specialties they do not treat. Every week, open the search terms report, see what people actually typed before clicking, and block anything that does not fit. Read why location targeting matters for local clinics.

    2. Ad text and landing page that match the search

Write separate ads for the main things you treat, and send each ad to a page about that thing. The page should show your timings, location, fees if you choose to show them, and a button to call or book, near the top. It also has to load quickly on a phone: see how to make a clinic website load faster.

If you do not have a website yet, every Vaidya OS plan includes a free clinic website with a booking button. Filling in your details takes about 10 minutes, our team sends a preview within 48 hours, and it goes live once you approve it.

    3. Count calls and bookings, not clicks

Set up conversion tracking in Google Ads, so it counts what matters: calls from the ad, calls and booking clicks on your website, and requests for directions. At the front desk, ask new patients how they found you and note it down.

After a month, compare. Keep spending on the searches and ads that bring calls and visits, and pause the rest. Clicks on their own tell you very little.

    4. Answer every enquiry fast

Ads bring calls and messages at all hours. Make sure someone answers the clinic phone during timings, missed calls are returned the same day, and WhatsApp messages get a reply. Put your timings in the ad, so people call when you are open.

    Google Ads for doctors: examples

Example ad text (illustration, not a real clinic). A Google search ad has short headlines and a longer description. Replace the brackets with your details, and keep every line factual.

    SpecialtyHeadlineDescription
General physicianGeneral Physician in [Area]Fever, cough, BP and sugar check-ups. [Clinic name], near [landmark]. Open [timings]. Call or get directions.
PaediatricianChild Specialist in [Area]Check-ups and vaccination for newborns to teenagers. Monday to Saturday, [timings]. Call to book a visit.
DentistDental Clinic in [Area]Check-ups, fillings, cleaning and root canal treatment. [Clinic name], [timings]. Get directions.
DermatologistSkin Clinic in [Area]Consultations for acne, hair fall and skin allergies. Open [timings]. Call to book.

Do not run this: "Best Dentist in [City]. Painless Treatment Guaranteed. 5-Star Rated." "Best" is self-praise, "guaranteed" is a promise about results, and a rating claim in an ad draws attention to your standing. All three sit badly with the rules below.

    What the rules allow

Doctors in India follow the Indian Medical Council (Professional Conduct, Etiquette and Ethics) Regulations, 2002, which the NMC re-adopted in August 2023. They forbid soliciting patients and self-promotion, and they allow plain facts such as your clinic's name, services and fees. So keep ads factual: no "best", no guarantees, no cure claims. Google also has its own healthcare and medicines policy, which applies on top of these rules. Read it before you advertise treatments or medicines.

    Google Ads or SEO first?

For most clinics, start with the free basics: a complete Google Business Profile, genuine reviews and a clear website. They cost time rather than money, keep working after you stop paying, and make any ad you run later more likely to turn into a visit. Ads help when you need patients quickly, such as for a new clinic or a new service, and when those basics are already in place.

    Frequently asked questions

Are Google Ads worth it for a small clinic?

They can be, once your Google profile, reviews and website are in place. Without those, many clicks do not turn into visits. Start with the free basics, then test a small, tightly targeted campaign.

How much should a clinic spend on Google Ads?

There is no right number. Start small, set a daily limit, and judge the ads by calls and bookings, not clicks. Increase spending only on the searches that bring patients.

Are doctors allowed to run Google Ads in India?

Only in a limited way. The 2002 regulations the NMC re-adopted in August 2023 forbid soliciting patients and self-promotion, but allow plain facts such as your clinic's name, services and fees. Keep ad text factual. See Are doctors allowed to advertise in India?

What should a doctor's Google ad say?

Your specialty, your area, your timings and how to reach you, with a "Call" or "Get directions" button. Leave out "best", guarantees and claims about results.
