How patients find clinics on Google, what decides who shows up first, and a simple 90-day SEO plan for doctors: Google profile, website, reviews, content.

    In This Article

A patient in your area searches "child specialist near me". The clinic that shows up first is not always the best one. It is the one Google understands best: a complete Google Business Profile, a clear website, steady reviews and a few helpful pages that answer what patients ask. None of that needs a big budget. It needs the right basics, done consistently.

This guide is SEO for doctors and SEO for clinics in plain language: how patients find clinics on Google, what decides who shows up first, and a 90-day plan you can follow yourself. It is written for solo doctors and small clinics in India.

    In short:
    • For a clinic, local search matters most: the map results for "doctor near me" and "[specialty] in [area]".
    • Start with your Google Business Profile. It is free and it is what most patients see first.
    • Your website should say clearly who you are, what you treat, where you are and how to book, and work well on a phone.
    • Reviews and a few helpful pages build trust over months. Expect results in months, not days.

Local SEO for doctors: how patients find a clinic on Google

Local SEO for doctors means making your clinic show up when someone nearby searches for a doctor like you, mostly in the map results. When someone searches for a doctor, Google usually shows two things:

    • The map results (often called the local pack): three clinics with a map, ratings, hours and a call button. These come from Google Business Profiles.
    • The regular results below: websites, directories and articles.

For "near me" and "[specialty] in [area]" searches, most clicks go to the map results. That is why SEO for a clinic starts with your Google Business Profile, not your website. The website still matters: it supports the profile, and it is where patients decide whether to call you.

What decides who shows up first

Google's own help page says local results mainly depend on three things:

    • Relevance. How well your profile and website match what the patient searched. If your profile says "Doctor" and theirs says "Pediatrician", theirs matches "child specialist" better.
    • Distance. How close you are to the person searching. You cannot change this, but you can make sure your address and map pin are exactly right.
    • Prominence. How well known and trusted your clinic looks online: reviews, ratings, mentions on other sites, and a website that Google sees as useful.

Everything below improves relevance or prominence.

Step 1: Complete your Google Business Profile

This is the single most useful thing you can do, and it is free.

    • Claim and verify your profile. Many clinics are listed but never claimed.
    • Pick the right primary category: your specialty, such as Pediatrician or Dermatologist, not just "Doctor". Add secondary categories for other services.
    • Fill every field: hours, phone, website, services, and a short description of what you treat and where.
    • Add real photos: the entrance and signboard, waiting area, consultation room and the doctor. Patients want to know what to expect.
    • Post updates when something changes: new timings, a holiday closure, a health camp. Never put a phone number or offers in the post text. Use the Call button instead.
    • Skip the Questions and answers section. Google switched off the tool businesses used to manage profile questions in November 2025 (Google's change log). Put answers to common questions in your description, services and website instead.

For the full walkthrough, see how to set up a Google Business Profile for your clinic.

Step 2: Keep your name, address and phone the same everywhere

Your clinic name, address and phone number should be written exactly the same way on your Google profile, your website, your signboard and every directory you are listed on. Different spellings, old numbers or two addresses make Google less sure which details are right. Fix the listings you already have before adding new ones.

Step 3: Make your website clear and fast

Your website does not need to be big. It needs to answer a patient's questions quickly:

Behind the scenes, your pages also need clear titles, a secure (https) address, and structured data that tells Google your clinic's name, address and hours. If your site does not appear on Google at all, start with the 6-step technical fix. For structured data, see how schema markup works for clinics.

Step 4: Build reviews the right way

Reviews help both your ranking and a patient's decision. The right way to get them:

    • Ask every patient, not only the ones you think are happy. Selectively asking for positive reviews breaks Google's rules.
    • Make it easy: share the direct review link from your Google profile on WhatsApp or as a QR code at the front desk.
    • Never offer anything in return for a review, and never write reviews yourself or ask staff to.
    • Reply to reviews, good and bad, politely and without discussing any patient's medical details.

For the details, with example wording and example replies, see how to get more Google reviews.

Step 5: Answer patients' questions on your website

Patients search for more than your name. They search "when should my child get the flu vaccine", "is acne treatable", "diabetes diet". A few short, accurate pages that answer the questions you hear every day help Google see your clinic as relevant for them.

    • Pick 10 questions patients ask you most often.
    • Answer each in a short page, in simple words, and mention where you practise.
    • Link each answer to your booking page.
    • Publish steadily. One good page a fortnight beats ten rushed ones in a week.

Step 6: Get listed and mentioned locally

Mentions of your clinic on other trusted sites add to your prominence. Start with the obvious ones: the directories patients use in your city, your medical association's member list, and the hospitals or labs you work with. Health camps, school talks and local news interviews also lead to mentions. Keep the name, address and phone the same in every one.

    Advertising rules for doctors

Doctors in India are bound by the Indian Medical Council Regulations 2002, which the National Medical Commission re-adopted in August 2023. They ban soliciting patients and self-promotion (regulation 6.1.1), and they limit a doctor's signboard and prescription pad to name, qualifications, specialty and registration details (regulation 7.13). Keep your profile, website and posts factual: who you are, what you treat, where and when. Avoid claims like "best doctor in the city", guaranteed results, discounts or before-and-after promises. For a plain-English reading of what is and is not allowed, see Are doctors allowed to advertise in India? This is general information, not legal advice; if you are unsure, ask your State Medical Council.

What does SEO cost a clinic?

Most of the steps above cost time, not money. The Google Business Profile is free, reviews are free, and a clear website is a one-time job. The ongoing work is small but steady: an hour or two a week for photos, posts, replying to reviews and one new page every couple of weeks.

If you hire someone, whether a staff member with a checklist, a freelancer or an agency selling SEO services for doctors, ask them:

    • What exactly will you do each month, and how will I see it?
    • Will I approve every page and post before it goes live?
    • Will you avoid "best doctor" claims, results claims and fake reviews?
    • Who owns the website and the Google profile? (It should be you.)

Be careful with anyone who promises the number one position. Nobody can guarantee a Google ranking.

    SEO or ads: which first?

For most clinics, SEO first. A complete Google profile, genuine reviews and a clear website cost time, not money, and they keep working after you stop. Ads bring people only while you pay, and they send those people to the same profile and website. If the profile is half empty or the website is slow, you pay for clicks that do not turn into visits.

Ads make sense once the basics are in place, for a specific goal such as a new clinic, a new location or a new service, with a small daily budget you can stop at any time. Ads also have to stay within the same advertising rules above. Before you spend, read Google Ads for doctors and Facebook ads for doctors.

    Your 90-day plan

    1. Days 1 to 30, foundation. Claim and complete your Google Business Profile, fix your name, address and phone everywhere, and make sure your website has the basics from Step 3.
    2. Days 31 to 60, trust. Start asking every patient for a review, reply to existing reviews, and add real photos. Publish your first three question-and-answer pages.
    3. Days 61 to 90, steady growth. Keep one new page every two weeks, post profile updates, and get listed with your association and partner labs. Check your Google profile's performance report once a month: searches, calls and direction requests.

Local rankings usually move over months, not days. What matters is doing these basics steadily.

Short on time? What to do yourself, what tools check, what to hand off

After the first 90 days, the work becomes a small routine: a few minutes a day to ask for reviews, a little time each week on your Google profile, and one page a month. Split it like this.

    Only you can do:

    • Ask for reviews, every patient, the same way, at the end of the visit.
    • Read what goes out under your name. Whoever writes your pages, the advertising rules above apply to you.
    • Share what patients ask you. Your consultation questions are the best source of topics.

Free tools can check (but not fix):

    • Google Search Console shows whether Google has found your pages and which searches bring people to your site.
    • PageSpeed Insights shows how fast your site loads on a phone.
    • Your Google Business Profile's performance report shows searches, calls and direction requests.

No tool can write a useful page or earn you a review, so be wary of anything sold as fully "automated SEO".

What most doctors hand off: the steady writing of service and location pages, website updates and post planning.

A realistic routine: every day, ask for reviews; every week, reply to new reviews and add one profile update; every month, check Search Console and your profile's numbers, and add or improve one page.

    Frequently asked questions

How is SEO used in healthcare?

It helps patients find the right doctor when they search. For a clinic, that mostly means appearing in the map results for "[specialty] near me", with a complete Google Business Profile, a clear website and genuine reviews.

How can I get my clinic on the first page of Google?

Complete and verify your Google Business Profile with the right category, keep your name, address and phone consistent everywhere, build genuine reviews, and have a clear, mobile-friendly website. Distance to the searcher also matters, and nobody can guarantee a position.

How long does SEO take for a clinic?

Profile fixes can show within weeks. Steady improvement in local rankings usually takes a few months of consistent work.

Do I need a website if I have a Google Business Profile?

The profile gets you seen; the website helps patients decide and helps Google understand what you treat. Most clinics need both, but the profile comes first.

Can I ask patients for Google reviews?

Yes. Ask every patient, share the direct link, and never offer anything in return. Do not ask only the patients you expect to be happy.

What is local SEO for doctors?

It is the work that makes your clinic show up for nearby patients searching for your specialty, mostly in the Google map results. The main parts are a complete, verified Google Business Profile, the same name, address and phone everywhere, genuine reviews, and a clear website.

Is SEO better than Google Ads for a clinic?

They do different jobs. SEO costs time and keeps working; ads bring visitors only while you pay. Most clinics should get their Google profile, reviews and website right first, and use ads later for a specific goal.

    Can clinic SEO be automated?

Only partly. Free tools can check your site's speed and whether Google can see it, but useful pages and genuine reviews need people, and a doctor should approve what is published.

Is local SEO different from regular SEO?

Yes. Local SEO is about the map results for nearby searches, driven by your Google Business Profile, reviews and consistent details. Regular SEO is about ranking web pages. A clinic needs local SEO first.
